What to Expect in 2008

by Lawren Ussery

Wedding trends, like any other fad, constantly evolve along with the modern brides they serve. Here is a little compilation of trends I’ve noticed or heard whispers of in the recent weeks. A few of them (I think) provide for some pretty unique photo ops.

  • Bold, saturated colors. Expect to see jewel tones like cerulean, emerald green, and plum exchanged for whites, creams and subdued pastels.
  • Disney Inspired Gowns. At first I thought this was a really bad idea, but Disney seems to have gotten it right. The gowns are affordable, and they’re totally chic. I particularly like the “Belle” and “Ariel” inspired dresses.
  • Glam Brides. I.e., over the top hairstyles, super luxurious papery and décor, even raspberry or plum colored wedding gowns. Talk about color saturation.
  • Estate Tables. No more eight-to-a-table rounds; long and linear is the way to go. Estate table schemes also allow for a totally unique and different breed of centerpiece (something us floral designers love to imagine about).
  • Split-Personality Brides. Don’t be surprised if the bride you are shooting for goes MIA for a few minutes only to make a grand (second) entrance dressed in a totally new outfit (and maybe even a new hairstyle).
  • Eco-Friendly and Organic Weddings. Brides are taking conservation much further than just using recycled paper for wedding invitations. With so many different options, couples could potentially throw a completely sustainable wedding, using bamboo linens, organically grown food and pesticide-free flowers. The most eco-conscious couples are even going so far as to exchange their wedding limo for a bicycle-built-for-two.
